Principal's Message

In speaking to families about the beginning of school this year, I have noticed several things in common.  Parents have shared that they are happy to see their children back at work, busy and productive.  Families have also expressed appreciation for the work we have done preparing for a school year like no other.  The recognition of our commitment in offering the best educational experience possible for our children given the circumstances has been extremely validating. However, this year, opening up school has conjured up so many mixed emotions.  On the one hand, students are happy to see their peers and their teachers, even if it is just through a Zoom meeting.  On the other hand, we are mourning the loss of the excited energy that the new school year brings.

A colleague at the district office shared the article below that outlines what we are all experiencing at this moment in time.  There are many heroes that have helped us get through our daily lives during a pandemic: child care providers, health care workers, food providers, and yes, teachers. And the unsung heros are also parents who have stepped up to be all of the above.  Another common theme I have heard is how difficult it has been for families who are trying to balance work, parenting, school schedules and household chores while at the same time, somehow keeping their family engaged.

For me personally, I wish we were beginning the school year with students on campus.  I truly miss seeing our students and sometimes find it difficult to find purpose in my work when I am not working directly with students. While I am proud of the work we have done, and do believe that we can still make a difference in children’s lives, it remains difficult for me not to engage in person.  Yet, I have to acknowledge the fact that the world has significantly changed, in more ways than one. This article helped me put things in perspective giving me permission to be vulnerable and sometimes even incomplete.  We are all going to get depleted, but we are also resilient, and can get through this. Who knows, we may ever return better than before, taking what we have learned during this pandemic and applying it to new situations.

SCEF

Please support our efforts through your workplace giving program, where you can make a one-time gift, or set up for a monthly recurring gift. Check Double the Donation to see if your company participates. We know that MANY companies have special DOUBLE or TRIPLE opportunities between now and the end of 2020. Check your company’s internal website/intranet for these AMAZING giving opportunities.

If your employer doesn’t offer a charitable giving program, please consider setting up a recurring gift to SCEF. Select a monthly amount that you are comfortable with and see how easy it is to meet our annual ask of $1500 per student. For example, if you act NOW, $150/mo x 10 months (Sept-June) gets you to the “ask”. As always, whatever amount works for your family is appreciated!  Go to www.scefkids.org/donate to set-up your monthly contribution.

We expect the need to grow this year and hope you or someone you know will get involved in this rewarding volunteer experience.

If you are interested in learning more, please mark your calendar for our annual new tutor orientation & training which will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, September 15. There are two identical sessions, 10:00-11:00 am OR 7:00-8:00 pm. Please RSVP via the links to attend whichever time is most convenient for you.
