Welcome Back to School

Hello CMS Families,

I hope everybody had both a restful and eventful summer.  I have seen several students around campus over the last few weeks and, although they won’t admit it, I think they are looking forward to being back in school.  I know that I am excited to see them all on the first day. 

The CMS staff is also greatly anticipating the beginning of this school year because we have so many exciting things going on. We are bringing in some new programs and events that we think will greatly benefit our students.  I will be sharing the details as the year progresses.  

Teachers, administrators and staff have done a lot of work leading up to the first weeks of school, and we are ready for students to arrive on Central Day.  Please remember our first day of school is Wednesday (8/21/19).  We will have a special Wednesday minimum day schedule.  School will begin at 8:30 AM and students will see all of their teachers, zero period will always begin at 7:45 AM. 

Central Day

Mark your calendars for Central Day on Monday (8/19/19) from 4:00 to 6:30 PM. Students will pick up their schedules and will have an opportunity to walk the campus.  All of our partner organizations will be present, including PTA, SCEF and Healthy Cities. We will also have food trucks and some music playing so expect to have a good time.  

If there is a mistake in the schedule, we will have Schedule Change Request Forms available at Central Day.  Please do not fill out a request form for teacher requests or to have your child’s friends in their class. We have done a great deal of work balancing classes and want to preserve the class rosters as much as possible.

Also mark your calendars for CMS Back-to-School Night, Wednesday (8/28/19) beginning in the gym at 6:00 PM. I hope to see you there.  Friday (8/30) will be minimum days. 

Please notify the school office as soon as possible if your child will NOT be returning to our school in the fall.  This helps with class placements and allows us to have a more accurate enrollment count.

Daily Bell Schedule

First period begins at 8:40am every day except Wednesdays which begins at 8:30am.  Zero period always begins at 7:45am. Our dismissal is at 3:15pm every day but Wednesday which has an early release at 1:15pm.

 School Supplies

The San Carlos School District and the Arroyo/CMS PTA continue to be committed to providing the necessary school supplies for each student in order to ensure that all students have equal access to educational opportunities. There is no need to fill backpacks with new school supplies. However, we can always use more supplies. If you would like to donate supplies, or if your student wants to buy their own supplies, I have included a link for suggested middle school supplies.  As always, parents can also help provide classroom supplies and field trip funds by supporting SCEF and our Arroyo/CMS PTA.

Volunteers

We always need volunteers and love to see parental involvement in our schools. Middle schoolers still need their parents and guardians.  Please consider signing up for any of the volunteer options we have available. More information will be available at our Welcome Week events or you are welcome to reach out to me, your child’s teacher, or our PTA leaders any time to find out how you can get involved.  

PTA Membership

We have one PTA that serves both CMS and Arroyo and we welcome your partnership. Your PTA membership, volunteer hours, and donations support teacher grants, library, Art-in-Action, Garden and other programs and events. We couldn’t do it without our Parent Partners. Thank you! Please join us for our first PTA meeting on Wednesday, 9/11 at 8:45 am in the Library.

Cell Phone Policy: Supporting our culture of social development

As part of our culture, we expect students to be fully present in the moment, be aware of their environment and each other, even to happily cross the quad to speak with one another. To promote these behaviors, cell phones must be turned off and be out of sight in backpacks once students arrive on campus. If a student needs to reach you or you need to reach him or her, we will use the school phones: (650) 508-7321. Please create a contact for Central on your own cell phones, so you recognize us if we call you, thank you!

Reinforcing Expected Behaviors Home and School

Our culture promotes behaviors that are Responsible (aware that our choices affect others), Respectful (considerate of others’ perspectives), Supportive (valuing our classmates) and Safe (aware of our surroundings, making safe choices). Please consider using this language when you work with your students at home.  We called it our 2 SSs and 2 RRs. 

We will be holding a welcome back assemble for our students on Thursday afternoon, 8/22. During this time, we will be reviewing our Positive Behavior Intervention and Support guidelines. Please take a few minutes to read over the Student Planners to become familiar with behavior expectations at Central.
